Garment steamers are indispensable for maintaining the crisp, professional appearance of our work blouses and our travel attire (even when living out of a bag).
How long has it been since you cleaned your trusted garment steamer?
For those who use hard water yet have never cleaned their steamer, the buildup of mineral deposits can come as a shock.
The worst aspect is that the mineral deposit might eventually clog the steamer and cause white powdery spots on your clothes.
Follow these easy measures every few months or when the steam volume slows down to save your steamer and work clothes.
Helpful tip: Only use distilled water in your garment steamer to avoid calcification occurring in the first place. Because distilled water lacks salts and minerals, it won’t leave behind unsightly white mineral stains on your dark clothing.
Items required:
- White vinegar
- Distilled water
Carry out these instructions in order:
- Pour one part white vinegar and two parts distilled water into the reservoir. It would be best to run the steamer until roughly half of the mixture has been used.
- Before removing it from the steamer, wait until the water has cooled to the touch.
- Repeat the procedure until the obstruction is removed or the mineral formations are no longer there.
- Give the steamer a final rinse to prevent residual vinegar from ruining your clothes when you steam them. Put in an entire bottle of distilled water and let the machine run till 50% of the water has evaporated. Then, remove all the water from the steamer and then allow it to air dry thoroughly.
