Overview
In 2020, GMC announced that it would be launching a new electric pickup truck and SUV under the Hummer brand. They have up to 1000 horsepower and offer an estimated range of 329 miles per charge. With that much power, these go from 0 to 60 mph in 3 seconds, making them one of the market’s most powerful electric SUVs/trucks.

In addition, the new pickup truck features a cool four-wheel steering feature, making it perfect for taking off-road trips. It has a removable roof panel and optional air suspension, making it the ideal vehicle for any adventure.
Rivian and Tesla, as well as traditional manufacturers like Ford, are developing their own models in this expanding category, making pickup trucks the next challenge for electric vehicles.
Hummer EV power and performance
The new truck is being called the “EV Edition 1,” and it’s clear that GMC is focusing on electric vehicles. This isn’t surprising, as electric cars are becoming more popular every year.
What may be surprising to some people is the power and performance of the Hummer EV. It has three electric motors and a torque of 11,500 lb-ft, and that’s more than enough power to take on any terrain or situation. Plus, all-wheel drive is standard, so you’ll never lose traction no matter where you are.
The truck can reach 60 mph in just 3 seconds-faster than most other SUVs on the market today.
For the time being, the Hummer EV’s only engine choice is a system with three electric motors producing 1000 horsepower.
Hummer EV connectivity and infotainment
One of the most important aspects of a car is its infotainment and connectivity systems. These days, it’s essential for a vehicle to have a good UI, be able to connect to your smartphone, and include standard features like GM OnStar. This system allows you to control various functions of your car from your smartphone, including starting it remotely, locking or unlocking it, checking tire pressure or oil levels, and more.

GMC contracted Epic Games to create the graphics for its infotainment system. The results are evident in the 13.4-inch display, with a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel that offers high resolution and advanced graphics-but with lag that suggests it doesn’t have enough power to keep up with the software’s capabilities.
The Hummer EV comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability for a more seamless and more effortless transition between apps in the car. You can easily use voice commands on either platform to access your favorite music, navigation, messaging, and other apps while driving.
Hummer EV range and battery
One of the most critical aspects of an electric vehicle is its range. How far can you go before needing to charge again? The GMC Hummer EV has a range of up to 329 miles, which is pretty impressive! And if you need to charge up while on the go, no problem-the truck has a 350-kilowatt fast-charging capability that will add 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes. You can also charge it at regular public charging stations or via a supplied adapter.
Of course, even with all these great features, battery life is always something people are curious about. The GMC Hummer’s Ultium battery-pack technology is estimated to last up to 10 years or 150,000 miles. Not too bad! Whether you’re out on a long road trip or running errands around town, the GMC Hummer EV is sure to keep you going without any problems.
I can assure you that the Hummer’s 800V 205kWh battery charges swiftly. However, because of the size of the battery, even a quick charge will not fill this monster up as quickly as a more economical car with a small battery and a similar range.
Let’s say you come to a halt at one of the 50kW EVgo stations, which are still popular. At 50kW, it would take nearly four hours to fill the 200+kWh pack.
Hummer EV fuel economy
Regarding fuel economy, electric vehicles (EVs) have a distinct advantage over gas-powered cars. That’s because EVs don’t need to expend energy on the combustion process, only on moving the vehicle forward. And with more and more models hitting the market, choosing an EV is becoming increasingly accessible.
Take the GMC Hummer EV, for example. This truck has a higher MPGe rating than the Rivian R1T-the current king of electric SUVs. The EPA estimates for the Hummer EV (51 MPGe city, 43 MPGe highway, and 47 MPGe combined) are better than average for an electric vehicle, making it an excellent choice for anyone looking to save money at the pump.
But even with all these advantages, some people still doubt that EVs can meet their needs regarding long-distance travel. That’s where the GMC Hummer EV comes in. With a range of up to 329 miles, this SUV can handle most trips without issue. So don’t worry-the GMC Hummer EV has you covered no matter your needs.
Hummer EV regenerative braking
The GMC Hummer EV has a regenerative braking system that is activated by the back of the steering wheel. This system is the most powerful I’ve ever tried, and it was able to bring the car to a complete stop very quickly.
In addition, the GMC Hummer EV has three levels of regenerative braking. Level 1 provides the most braking and is similar to what you would experience in a hybrid, and level 2 provides some regen but not as much as level 1. Finally, level 3 offers the least amount of braking and is almost no recovery at all.
Another unique feature of the GMC Hummer EV is its Terrain Mode. This mode uniquely integrates the brake system with One Pedal Driving off-road to give the driver precise control. For instance, when driving in a hilly area, the Terrain Mode will allow the driver to use the brake pedal to slow down and hold the car on a hill without using the accelerator.
Hummer EV payload and towing limits
Regarding towing and payload capacity, the GMC Hummer is one of the most powerful electric vehicles on the road. With a rating of 7,500 lbs. of towing and 1,300 lbs. of carrying, this truck can haul just about anything you need.
With such a large battery, we’d wager that it will be able to carry large payloads much further than a Ford or Rivian EV.
The Hummer EV also features massive towing hooks on the nose and rear, which I doubt will be utilized frequently but look fantastic.
Hummer EV interior

The interior of the Hummer EV is an updated take on a T-top design. It features comfortable seats and plenty of legroom, but we were disappointed with the quality of the materials used in the cabin. Considering its price point, I would have expected higher-quality materials.
The moon-inspired touches, like the footprint and speaker grilles, serve as reminders of GM’s connection to NASA. The transparent panels are meant to give the truck a convertible vibe similar to the Jeep Gladiator.
When in position, the translucent panels function similarly to a standard panoramic glass sunroof, but they can be removed and stored in the Hummer EV’s frunk.
Hummer EV Driver-Assistance features and safety ratings
When it comes to safety features, GMC offers a variety of options for drivers. For example, the Hummer comes with lane-keeping assist and blind-spot monitoring as standard features. In addition, the car has an impressive safety score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
The Tesla Autopilot is widely considered one of the most advanced cruise control systems on the market, and it can handle steering, acceleration, and braking in most conditions. However, you should note that Tesla’s Autopilot is not a self-driving system-the driver is still responsible for remaining alert and in control at all times.
GM’s Super Cruise is just as capable of driving itself as Tesla Autopilot, and it comes standard on all new models and can be used on any highway that GM has mapped. The only difference between Super Cruise and Autopilot is that Super Cruise requires you to keep your hands on the wheel at all times–if they’re not detected on the wheel after a few seconds, then a warning will sound.
For more information about the safety scores for the Hummer, visit NHTSA and IIHS websites.
Hummer EV warranty
When you buy a GMC Hummer EV, you get more than just a powerful electric pickup truck; you’re also getting bumper-to-bumper coverage for three years or 36,000 miles and powertrain coverage for five years or 60,000 miles. This is in addition to the 8-year or 100,000-mile hybrid components warranty and complimentary maintenance for the first visit. So your Hummer EV will be covered whether you’re hitting the open road or taking it easy around town.
Hummer EV Off-road capabilities
The GMC Hummer EV is an impressive off-road machine. With its all-wheel drive, four-wheel steering, and Terrain mode, it can easily navigate just about any terrain. The truck has a lot of suspension travel and cameras to help you see where you’re going, even if the hood blocks your view. The tires can dig for traction on loose surfaces without veering off into a ditch. And when it’s time to scale some boulders, the Hummer can do so easily.

The four-wheel steering system makes this vehicle more manageable for off-road driving. However, having both the front and back wheels turn has additional benefits. The crab-walk causes the Hummer EV’s four wheels to rotate similarly, causing it to go diagonally.
The Hummer EV has 13 inches of suspension travel and 16 inches of ground clearance–more than enough to get over most obstacles in your way. Plus, when your foot is off the gas pedal, the Hummer will roll to a stop and hold itself there, similar to a one-pedal driving mode. This gives you more control over the truck when navigating challenging terrain.
With two or four-door variants available, this truck is perfect for the outdoors enthusiast who wants a car that can handle all types of terrain. The Hummer EV can be adjusted to handle both on and off-road scenarios, making it an ideal choice for most situations.
Hummer EV road noise
The Hummer EV is the quietest electric pickup truck on the market. It was designed with a noise-canceling system that eliminates road noise so that you can enjoy a peaceful drive.
EVSE technology implements a unique Bose technology and information obtained from the car to better disguise wind, road, and tire noise. The companies have developed a variety of sound profiles, with the “sound being modest, offering a layer of acoustic texture to the vehicle’s on-road performance” under Normal driving.
There is a “heavier bass tone to help keep the driver engaged to the vehicle’s performance” in Terrain Mode. Mainly as the torque of the Hummer EV builds, so does the loudness.
A “deeper rumble is heard as the car drives fast on difficult terrains, such as dirt, gravel, and sand” when in Off-Road Mode.
Final words
The Hummer EV is a luxurious, adventurous truck that will make heads turn, accelerate to 60 mph like a sports car, and perform off-road like a champ. There’s always something interesting to experience with this truck. The four-wheel steering is revolutionary for off-roading and tight parking, and riding with the folding top down is fun.
The Hummer EV, on the other hand, is still a lot of grandness. Its 200+kWh battery can power four compact EVs, and it is so large that it is difficult to see people on bikes and pedestrians over the hood beneath.
In general, we believe that Hummer EV is not for the regular people, but instead, it’s for folks who would otherwise buy a Cadillac Escalade or another gas/diesel monster.
